Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Seeking Allah's Protection

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils.

Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately before entering the bathroom or toilet. It's a moment of transition from the public, clean space to a private area often associated with impurities and, from an Islamic perspective, the dwelling place of jinn.

How to Read

Recite this dua before stepping into the bathroom. It's a supplication for protection, asking Allah to shield you from any harm or ill-intentioned beings that might be present. It’s generally recommended to recite it upon entering, and some scholars mention reciting it before closing the door.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua serves as a powerful shield. By invoking Allah's name and seeking refuge, we acknowledge His dominion over all spaces, seen and unseen. The mention of 'khubuth' (male devils) and 'khaba'ith' (female devils) specifically refers to the jinn, who are known to inhabit places of impurity. This supplication is a practical manifestation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah), relying on Him alone for protection rather than any material means. It reminds us that even in the most private and seemingly mundane moments, we are under Allah’s watch and can seek His safeguarding presence. This habit cultivates a constant state of remembrance (dhikr) and awareness of Allah throughout our day, elevating even ordinary actions into acts of worship.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say, 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from evil and evil things.' (And it was narrated that) When 'Abdullah bin Rawaahah's feet got injured, he said, 'If the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had not forbidden us to build houses on stilts, I would have built them on stilts.' Then he mentioned the devils. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306)
