Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Seeking Allah's Protection

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils (or from all evil and harmful things).

Bismillahi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

When to Read

This dua should be recited just before entering the bathroom or toilet. It's a moment when we are physically vulnerable and spiritually exposed, making it an ideal time to invoke Allah's protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus before stepping inside the bathroom. It's recommended to do so while standing and before taking your first step in. Some scholars also mention saying 'Bismillah' separately before the main dua.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a shield against the jinn and Shayateen who are known to frequent such places. By seeking refuge in Allah, we ask for His protection from any harm, whispers, or temptations they might try to inflict upon us. It also reminds us that even in the most private of moments, Allah's presence and protection are sought, maintaining our awareness of Him.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When one of you wants to enter the privy, he should say: Bismillahi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306). Another narration in Sahih Muslim (375) states: 'When one of you enters his house, he should say: Bismillah, wa 'ala bismillah, wa 'allahi tawakkalna. And when he is about to eat, he should say: Bismillah. And when one of you speaks, he should say: Bismillah. And when one of you writes something, he should say: Bismillah.' The specific dua for the bathroom comes from the narration in Al-Bukhari.
