Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Seeking Allah's Help for Purity and Ease

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 6306 (Bukhari), 375 (Muslim)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils (or from all evil and impurities).

Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

When to Read

This dua is recited just before entering the bathroom or toilet area. It's a simple yet profound practice that sets a tone of seeking divine protection even in mundane activities.

How to Read

Recite this dua *before* stepping into the bathroom. The 'Bismillah' is fundamental, reminding us to begin all affairs in Allah's name. The second part is a direct supplication for protection against unseen evils that may reside in such places, a practice taught to us by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a shield. It purifies our intention and seeks Allah's protection from Shaytan and impurities, both physical and spiritual, as we engage in an act that requires privacy and cleanliness. It’s a beautiful example of how Islam integrates remembrance of Allah into every aspect of our lives, turning even ordinary actions into opportunities for worship and seeking closeness to our Creator. By seeking refuge, we acknowledge our dependence on Allah and His power to safeguard us from harm.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When one of you wants to enter the toilet, he should say: Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306, Sahih Muslim 375). The word 'khubuth' refers to male devils and 'khaba'ith' refers to female devils. Some scholars also interpret it as seeking refuge from all evil and impurities.
