Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Seeking Allah's Blessings for Purity and Protection

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

بِسْمِ اللهِ, اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from all evil things which cause impurity and from all evil jinn (male and female).

Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith

When to Read

This dua is recited just before entering the bathroom or toilet. It's a moment when we are about to engage in a private act that can be a source of impurity for the body, and it's a place where evil spirits are said to frequent.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity before stepping into the bathroom. It's recommended to recite it while standing at the entrance, with your left foot entering first (as is the general etiquette for entering places of impurity). The intention is to seek Allah's protection from any harm or evil, both spiritual and physical, associated with this place.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, we are not just asking for physical cleanliness, but also spiritual protection. Bathrooms are considered places where Shaytan can have influence, and seeking refuge in Allah safeguards us from his whispers and harmful suggestions. It reminds us that even in private moments, we are in the presence of Allah and seeking His aid. This practice is a beautiful example of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ comprehensive guidance, covering even the most mundane aspects of life and turning them into acts of worship and protection.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When one of you wants to enter the toilet, he should say: Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith (In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from all evil things which cause impurity and from all evil jinn (male and female)).' *Other narrations also mention:* Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'The Prophet ﷺ, when he entered the toilet, would say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 142, Sahih Muslim 375). The difference in wording between the two Bukhari narrations (6306 vs 142) doesn't change the essence of the supplication and the protection sought.
