Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Remembering Allah's Mercy and Our Vulnerability

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from all evil jinn, male and female.

Bismillah, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

When to Read

This dua is recited specifically before entering the toilet or bathroom. It's a moment we often enter alone and can feel like a space separate from our usual observance. Reciting this dua reminds us that even in such private moments, we are still under Allah's protection and acknowledge His sovereignty over our physical needs and the unseen realms.

How to Read

Recite this dua just before stepping into the bathroom or toilet area. It's recommended to say it while entering, with the left foot going in first, as this is the established sunnah for entering such places. The intention is to seek Allah's protection from the mischievous and harmful jinn who are known to frequent these places.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a profound acknowledgment of our vulnerability and Allah's all-encompassing protection. By seeking refuge in Allah from the 'khubuth' (evil things, referring to male devils/jinn) and 'khaba'ith' (evil females/jinn), we are actively seeking His shield in a place where we are physically exposed and where such beings are said to reside. It transforms a mundane, private act into an act of worship, reinforcing our reliance on Allah and His power over all aspects of our lives, seen and unseen. It's a practical application of our belief in Allah's lordship and His ability to safeguard us from harm, even from sources we cannot perceive.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Verily, this privy is attended by devils (or jinn). So when one of you comes to the privy, he should say: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil jinn and jinn-girls (or from all evil jinn, male and female).’” (Sahih Muslim 375/2709 and Sahih al-Bukhari 6306, the wording here is from Bukhari). Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) intended to enter the toilet, he would say: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from impurity, from evil (khubuth) and evil things (khaba'ith).’”
