Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Gratitude for Sustenance and Bodily Functions

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 142 (Bukhari), 375 (Muslim)

بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils.

Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

When to Read

This dua is recited *before* entering the bathroom or toilet area. It's a way of seeking Allah's protection as we enter a place often associated with impurity and the dwelling of Shayatin (devils). The act of seeking refuge is a profound reminder that even in mundane moments, we are under Allah's watchful care.

How to Read

Recite this supplication quietly before stepping into the bathroom. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), acknowledging His presence and seeking His blessing and protection in this action. Then, follow with the prayer for refuge from evil spirits. The intention is to purify our actions and seek divine safeguarding.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua serves multiple purposes: it seeks protection from harmful influences and evil spirits that are said to frequent such places. It also cultivates humility and gratitude, reminding us that even the basic functions of our bodies are a blessing from Allah, for which we are dependent on Him. By invoking Allah's name and seeking His refuge, we spiritually cleanse ourselves before and after using the facilities, transforming an ordinary act into an act of worship.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When any one of you wants to enter the privy, he should say: Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 142, Sahih Muslim 375). The scholars explain that 'al-khubuth' refers to male devils and 'al-khaba'ith' refers to female devils. This practice shows the comprehensive nature of the Sunnah, covering even seemingly private aspects of life.
