Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Acknowledging Allah's Sovereignty

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 142

بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils.

Bismillah. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khaba'ith.

When to Read

This supplication is recited just before entering the bathroom or toilet area. It's a beautiful practice that turns a mundane entry into a moment of seeking divine protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely before stepping into the bathroom. Some scholars mention placing the left foot forward upon entering and the right foot forward when exiting, following the Sunnah of entering with the left and exiting with the right for other places, and reversing it for the bathroom as a sign of distinguishing the two actions. The intention is crucial – actively seeking Allah's protection from unseen evils.

Virtues & Benefits

The bathroom is a place where we remove our garments and are more vulnerable. It's also historically associated with Jinn and Shayateen. By reciting this dua, we are acknowledging that even in such a private space, Allah's power encompasses all. We are actively invoking His protection against the whispers of Shaytan and the harm that might be present, safeguarding both our physical and spiritual well-being. This act cultivates consciousness of Allah (taqwa) in all aspects of life, big or small.

Source & Authentication

Anas reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'When one of you enters the toilet, he should say: Bismillah. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khaba'ith.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 142, Sahih Muslim 375). The word 'khubuth' refers to devils in general, and 'khaba'ith' refers to she-devils. This narration highlights the Prophet's ﷺ keen awareness of potential spiritual harm and his practical guidance to protect his Ummah.
