أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ العَبْدُ مِنْ رَبِّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ فَأَكْثِرُوا الدُّعَاءَ
The closest a servant is to his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, is when he is in sujood, so increase your supplication.
Aqrabu ma yakunu al-'abdu min Rabbihi 'azza wa jall wa huwa saajidun fa-akthiru ad-du'aa'
When to Read
This profound advice from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ applies to all prayers, both obligatory (fardh) and voluntary (nafl). Specifically, it's during the sujood (prostration) portion of your prayer. Think of it as a dedicated window of opportunity when your heart and mind are most receptive, and your connection to Allah is at its peak. You can make this general supplication, and also use this time for your personal duas for anything you need.
How to Read
This isn't a specific phrase to recite, but rather a guiding principle. When you are in sujood, maintain the proper posture and stillness. Feel the humility and closeness to Allah. This is the time to pour your heart out, making specific, personal duas for your needs, your family, your community, and even the entire Ummah. Let your sincerity and focus be your guide. You can, of course, combine this with other duas you know, such as the Prophet's ﷺ supplications.
Virtues & Benefits
The benefit is immense: you are seizing the moment when Allah grants the greatest closeness to His servant. This increases the likelihood of your duas being accepted. It's a practical manifestation of seeking Allah's help and guidance in your most humble state. Making dua in sujood also fosters humility, dependency on Allah, and a deep sense of Tawakkul (reliance).
