The Prophet's ﷺ Dua When Distressed in Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and subjugated by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited during the prayer, particularly during the prostration (sujood) or in the final sitting (tashahhud) before the salam. It's a perfect supplication when feeling overwhelmed by life's burdens, facing challenges that cause worry, or when seeking Allah's protection from debilitating states like inability to act, laziness, fear, or excessive debt.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, recognizing that all strength and refuge come from Allah alone. The prayer itself is a confidential conversation with our Creator, so pouring out our deepest concerns and seeking refuge in this manner is highly effective. Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) as required for prayer.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua covers seeking refuge from a wide range of spiritual and worldly afflictions. By reciting it, one seeks Allah's protection from: * **Anxiety and Sorrow (Al-Ham wa Al-Hazan):** These are states that can cripple the heart and mind, preventing one from finding peace or performing their duties. * **Incapacity and Laziness (Al-'Ajz wa Al-Kasal):** These prevent a person from achieving their potential and fulfilling their responsibilities towards Allah and creation. * **Cowardice and Stinginess (Al-Jubn wa Al-Bukhl):** These character flaws hinder one from standing up for truth, giving charity, and acting generously. * **Overwhelming Debt and Subjugation by Men (Ghalabat ad-Dayn wa Qahr ar-Rijal):** These are significant worldly burdens that can lead to humiliation and hardship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself frequently recited this dua, indicating its immense importance and comprehensiveness in seeking Allah's protection.

Narrated by 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud): The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: "O Allah! I am Your slave and son of Your slave and son of Your slave-girl. My forehead is in Your Hand (i.e. control). My judgment on me is enforced. Your decree concerning me is just. I beseech You by every name that You have called Yourself, or have taught to anyone in Your creation, or have revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the delight of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sadness, and a reliever of my anxiety." But Allah will take away his sadness and replace it with pleasure.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Should we learn these words?' He replied: 'Yes, whoever hears them should by all means learn them.' Another version says: 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: "O Allah! I am Your slave and son of Your slave and son of Your slave-girl. My forehead is in Your Hand (i.e. control). My judgment on me is enforced. Your decree concerning me is just. I beseech You by every name that You have called Yourself, or have taught to anyone in Your creation, or have revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the delight of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sadness, and a reliever of my anxiety." It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Should we not learn them?' He replied: 'Yes, whoever hears them should by all means learn them.' Another version says: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge (from the evil of this world and its afflictions) by saying these words: "O Allah! I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from being overcome by debt and subjugated by men." He added, "Allah will take away the anxiety and grief of the person who says this." It was said to him: 'O Allah's Messenger! We are advised to learn these words.' He replied: 'Yes, we should learn them.' — Sahih al-Bukhari 6369
