The Prophet's (ﷺ) Dua for Seeking Allah's Approval and Paradise in the Final Tashahhud

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 1308

O Allah, I ask You for Your pleasure and Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your wrath and the Fire. O Allah, I ask You by Your knowledge that You grant me honor, and I seek refuge in You from humiliation. I ask You by Your power over me to make me live a good life and to cause me to die as a believer. I ask You to make me fear You in secret and in public, and I ask You to let me speak the truth in times of contentment and anger. I ask You for moderation in poverty and wealth, and I ask You for everlasting bliss, and the delight of the eye which does not cease. I ask You for contentment after destiny has been decreed, and I ask You for a pleasant life after death. I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face, and the longing to meet You, without any harmful distress or misleading trial. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides, rightly guided.

Allahumma inni as'aluka ridaka wal-jannah, wa a'udhu bika min sakhatika wan-nar. Allahumma inni as'aluka bi 'ilmika an tu'izzani, wa a'udhu bika min dhulli, wa as'aluka qudratika 'alayya an tuhyini hayatan tayyibah, wa an tawaffani mu'minan. Wa as'aluka khashyataka fil-ghaybi wash-shahadah, wa as'aluka kalimat al-haqqi fir-rida wal-ghadab. Wa as'aluka al-qasida fil-faqr wal-ghina, wa as'aluka na'iman la yanfadu, wa as'aluka qurrata 'aynin la tanqati'. Wa as'aluka ar-ridha ba'dal-qada', wa as'aluka barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt. Wa as'aluka ladhdhat an-nadari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ik, fi ghayri darra'in mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyinna bizinatil-iman, waj'alna hudatan muhtadeen.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah bin Masud: We used to recite the Tashahhud in the prayer and say: 'As-salamu 'ala Allah (Peace be upon Allah), as-salamu 'ala so-and-so.' One day Allah's Apostle passed by us and said: 'Allah Himself is Peace. So, when any one of you sits (in prayer) in every rak'a, he should say: 'At-tahiyatu lil-lahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibatu. At-tahiyatu lil-lahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibatu. 'As-salamu 'alaika Ayyuha an-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. 'As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibadil-lahis-salihin. (All compliments, all divine expressions of worship and all goodness are for Allah). Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and blessings. Peace be on us and on the true righteous slaves of Allah). ' (As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibadil-lahis-salihin). If you say this, you will have greeted every righteous slave (of Allah) in the heaven and the earth, or between the heaven and the earth. (And the Tashahhud is): 'Ash-hadu al-la ilaha ill-Allah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa Rasuluh.' (I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger). Then he (the narrator) mentioned the dua taught by the Prophet ﷺ: Allahumma inni as'aluka ridaka wal-jannah, wa a'udhu bika min sakhatika wan-nar. 'Abdullah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the Tashahhud and the dua in the Tashahhud, seeking by His knowledge that He might cause him to ascend the pulpit or that he might be pleased. He said: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka bi 'ilmika wa as'aluka min fadlika an tu'izzani, wa a'udhu bika min dhulli, wa as'aluka qudratika 'ala at-tahaffuzi kama qultu. As'aluka an tahya-ya tayyibatan wa tawaffani mu'minan wa an tahshi-rani musliman, wa as'aluka an tasqini min ka'si khayrika 'amman. Wa as'aluka an taj'ala dhalika al-mubarak. Wa as'aluka an tudkhilani al-jannata na'iman, wa as'aluka an tunajjiyani min an-nari wa an taj'ala al-hayata ziyadatan li min kulli khayrin, wa an taj'ala al-mawta rahatan li min kulli sharrin. Allahumma inni as'aluka khashyataka fil-ghaybi wash-shahadati, wa as'aluka kalimat al-haqqi fir-rida wal-ghadab. Wa as'aluka al-qasida fil-faqr wal-ghina. Wa as'aluka na'iman la yanfadu, wa as'aluka qurrata 'aynin la tanqati'. Wa as'aluka an turdini bi qada'ika, wa as'aluka barda al-'ayshi ba'da al-mawt. Wa as'aluka ladhdhata an-nadari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ika fi ghayri darra'in mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyinna bizinatul-iman, wa aj'alna hudatan muhtadeen.' This is a longer version, but the core dua is consistently found. The version provided at the top is the most widely cited and authentic form.
