The Prophet's (ﷺ) Dua for Asking Allah to Grant Him His Heart's Desires in Prayer

During Prayer
Hasan HadithJami' At-Tirmidhi 1900

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds and abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor, and to forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to test a people, then take me to Yourself without subjecting me to that test. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khayrat, wa tark munakarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li, wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fitnata qawmin fa tawaffani ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This profound supplication is particularly poignant to recite during the final moments of prayer, specifically in the *tashahhud* after reciting the *salawat* on the Prophet ﷺ. It's a time when our supplications are believed to be closer to acceptance. We can also make it a part of our *dua* during *sujood* (prostration), as the Prophet ﷺ said, "The closest the servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating. So increase your supplications" (Sahih Muslim 482).

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing the requests being made to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized sincerity in our supplications. While this specific dua is often recited in the final sitting of prayer, it can also be made during any part of your personal prayers (*nafl* or *witr*) or even during *du'a* after obligatory prayers.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates several vital spiritual aspirations. It asks Allah for the ability to perform good deeds and abstain from sins, a foundation for a righteous life. It also seeks the love of the poor, reflecting a compassionate heart and detachment from excessive worldly attachment. The plea for forgiveness and mercy is central to our relationship with Allah. Furthermore, it wisely asks for protection from trials and tribulations, and importantly, seeks Allah's love, the love of those who love Him, and the love of actions that draw us closer to Him. This holistic request aims for divine pleasure and closeness to the Creator, which is the ultimate success.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: When three years had passed since the Prophet (ﷺ) gave the best of Allah's creation his great mandate, he would not teach them anything except what Allah had commanded him. He would not pronounce anything except what Allah commanded him to pronounce. He said: 'O Allah, I ask you for the guidance and the right conviction and the piety and the chastity and the richness and the satisfaction.' Then he supplicated: 'O Allah, I ask You for the strength to act according to what is right, and to abandon what is wrong, and to love the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to try a people, take me to Yourself without my having been tried by them.' And he said: 'O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of the deed that brings me to Your love.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1900). The context of this hadith is the Prophet's (ﷺ) personal supplications, highlighting the profound nature of his requests to Allah, which we are encouraged to emulate.
