O Allah, bestow Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You bestowed Your blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah, bestow Your protection and goodness upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You bestowed Your protection and goodness upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious.
When to Read
This is the most complete form of the Salawat (sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ) and is specifically taught by the Prophet ﷺ himself to be recited in the final sitting of the prayer (Tashahhud). When you sit for the final Tashahhud, after reciting the initial greetings and affirmations, you are meant to then ask Allah to send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and his family in this manner, before reciting the final Taslim.
How to Read
Recite this Salawat with sincerity and a heartfelt desire for Allah's mercy upon the Prophet ﷺ and his household. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic correctly, focusing on the clarity of each word. The Prophet ﷺ taught this specific wording, so adhering to it is key. It's recited in the final sitting of the prayer, after the Tashahhud itself but before the final Taslim (saying 'Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah').
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this Salawat because it is the most complete way to ask Allah to bless him and his family, mirroring the blessings Allah bestowed upon the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his family. By asking Allah to bestow such significant blessings, we are engaging in a profound act of worship. The Prophet ﷺ himself said, 'When you hear the Adhan, repeat what the Mu'adhin says. Then ask Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah, for it is a station in Paradise, befitting only one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I will be that servant. And whoever asks Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah, he will be granted my intercession.' (Sahih Muslim 384). This Salawat is a direct way to seek that station and his intercession for us.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Abu Humayd as-Sa'idi that they said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how should we send blessings upon you?' He said: 'Say: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatihi kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatihi kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6357). A similar narration transmitted by Ka'b bin 'Ujrah mentions 'ala aali Muhammad' instead of 'ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatihi, and this is the commonly accepted wording used in prayer.
