سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَىٰ
Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.
Subhana Rabbiyal A'la
When to Read
This beautiful phrase is the central supplication recited during sujood (prostration) in prayer (Salah). It's a moment where we are closest to Allah, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'The closest the servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating.' (Sahih Muslim 482). Therefore, filling this profound moment with remembrance and glorification of Allah is a cornerstone of our worship. Recite it at least three times during each prostration, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, though you can certainly say it more.
How to Read
In sujood, ensure your forehead, nose, and hands are firmly on the ground. This posture symbolizes our humility and utter dependence on Allah. While in this position, consciously feel the weight of your body giving way to Allah's might. Recite 'Subhana Rabbiyal A'la' with a heart that is present, truly feeling the meaning of glorifying your Lord, the Most High. It’s not just the words; it's the heartfelt submission they represent. You can add other duas or supplications after this, especially in the Sunnah prayers, asking Allah for whatever you need.
Virtues & Benefits
This utterance, 'Subhana Rabbiyal A'la,' is a powerful act of glorifying Allah when we are at our most humble. It turns our physical act of prostration into a spiritual communion. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often prolong his sujood, filling it with this glorification and other prayers. By sincerely reciting this, we are actively fulfilling the command to remember Allah (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:41) and acknowledging His supreme transcendence over all things. This posture of sujood is also mentioned as a characteristic of the believers in the Quran (Surah Al-Furqan 25:72) and is a key posture that earns Allah's pleasure and forgiveness.

Narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when he prostrated said: 'O Allah, unto You I have submitted, and in You I believe, and in You I have placed my trust, and unto You I have turned, and by You I have argued. O Allah, I seek refuge in the might of Allah from the punishment of the Hell, and from the punishment of the grave.' He (peace be upon him) said: 'When the servant says: "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High), Allah says: "He has spoken the truth, so you prolong [your bowing and prostration]."' [Then when he raised his head] he said: 'O Allah, forgive me what I have done and what I have left undone, what I have done in secret and what I have done in the open.' He would prolong his standing and his sitting.
