Seeking Refuge in the Last Tashahhud

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 832

O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa min 'adhab al-qabri, wa min fitnatil mahya wal mamati, wa min sharri fitnatil masihid dajjal

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited in the last sitting of the prayer, after the tashahhud and before saying the salam. It's a crucial moment where we turn to Allah seeking protection from the most severe afflictions, both in this life and the next, right before concluding our prayer.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincerity and focus after completing the tashahhud. Understand the meaning of each phrase as you say it. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific wording and timing, so adhering to it ensures we are following his Sunnah. Ensure your prayer posture is correct and your heart is humbled before Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against four grave evils: the punishment of Hellfire, the torment of the grave, the afflictions of this life and death, and the immense fitnah of the Dajjal. By seeking refuge in Allah from these, we are asking for His ultimate protection, making our prayer a means of safeguarding ourselves from the worst.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach them [the Companions] how to perform the Tashahhud and how to supplicate at the end of the prayer, saying: 'When one of you finishes the Tashahhud, he should say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa min 'adhabi al-qabri, wa min fitnatil mahya wal mamati, wa min sharri fitnatil masihid dajjal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal)).
