Seeking Refuge from the Grave's Torments in Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 1377 (Bukhari), 588 (Muslim)

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabri, wa min 'adhab an-nari, wa min fitnat al-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal.

This is a crucial supplication recommended to be recited after the Tashahhud, before the final Tasleem (salutation) of the prayer. It's one of the four matters the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would specifically seek refuge from.

How to Read

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking refuge with Allah from the torments of the grave is a profound act of acknowledging His power and our need for His protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, despite being guaranteed Paradise, was diligent in making this supplication, teaching us its immense importance. It's a way to prepare ourselves spiritually for the hereafter and to consciously seek Allah's safeguard against the trials of this life and the immense challenges of the grave and the Day of Judgment.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'When any one of you finishes the Tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah with four things, saying: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the evil of the Dajjal.' Then he should say whatever he likes.' (Sahih Muslim 588) Another narration from Sahih al-Bukhari (1377) states: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah during prayer saying: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hellfire, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death.'
