Seeking Protection from the Evil of One's Actions in Prayer

During Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1551

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi

When to Read

This profound supplication is specifically recommended to be recited during the *tashahhud* (the final sitting in prayer, before the *taslim* or salutations). It's a moment of deep communion with Allah, where our hearts are most focused, making it the ideal time to seek refuge from hidden evils that might affect our faculties and intentions.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with concentration, especially as you reach the end of your prayer. Understand the meaning of each part: seeking refuge for your hearing (so it's not used for haram), sight (so it's not cast upon what's impermissible), tongue (so it's not used for backbiting or lies), heart (so it's not filled with doubt or ill will), and your reproductive organ (for purity). Utter it with the same seriousness as you would the *taslim*.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against the corruption that can creep into our actions, even within the sacred act of prayer. By seeking refuge for our senses and inner faculties, we are asking Allah to protect us from sins that originate from them, ensuring our worship is pure and accepted. It's a comprehensive plea for protection, acknowledging that true purity comes from Allah. It helps guard against distractions, impure thoughts, and the misuse of our God-given abilities, safeguarding the integrity of our prayer and our overall conduct.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach his companions how to seek refuge in Allah in their prayers. He taught them to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhab an-nar, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat ad-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-ma'ati.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Hellfire, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the *dajjal*, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.) And in another narration, he taught: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.)
