During Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 870

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ

Glory be to my Lord, the Most Magnificent.

Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim

When to Read

This beautiful glorification is recited during the Ruku' (bowing) position in Salah. It's a moment of profound humility, acknowledging Allah's greatness as we physically bow before Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would repeat this phrase multiple times in his bowing.

How to Read

While in Ruku', after you have settled into the position, recite 'Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim' at least three times. It's a Sunnah to do this an odd number of times, reflecting the Prophet's ﷺ practice. Ensure you are physically bowed, with your hands resting on your knees, maintaining a relaxed posture.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting 'Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim' in Ruku' is a fundamental part of our prayer, embodying submission and awe. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized its importance, teaching us that it is during this deep bowing that we are closest to Allah. It's a way to purify our minds and hearts from arrogance and to constantly remember Allah's supreme majesty. The Prophet ﷺ said: "When any one of you recites 'Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim' in Ruku', his Ruku' is completed." (Sunan Abi Dawud 870, graded Hasan).

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the verse 'So exalt [O Muhammad] the name of your Lord, the Most Great' (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:74) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Say it in your Ruku' (bowing)." And when the verse 'Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High' (Surah Al-A'la 87:1) was revealed, he said: "Say it when you prostrate." (Sunan Abi Dawud 870).
