Dua for When Worry Overcomes You in Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithAl-Adab Al-Mufrad 1212

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree concerning me prevails. Your judgment concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept with You in the knowledge of the unseen. I ask that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabia'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere humility and heartfelt supplication. Pause briefly in your prayer, perhaps after the recitation of the Qur'an in your prayer, and turn to Allah with this plea. Imagine your words reaching Him as you acknowledge His total control over your life and seek His divine intervention for relief. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to use such comprehensive supplications when facing hardship.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive petition that covers the acknowledgment of Allah's absolute sovereignty over our lives and a profound request for the most beneficial solace: the Qur'an. By asking for the Qur'an to be the 'springtime of the heart,' we seek spiritual renewal and joy. As the 'light of the chest,' it illuminates our understanding and provides clarity. It's a divine prescription for banishing sorrow and alleviating anxieties, turning our focus from worldly troubles to the remembrance of Allah and His magnificent Book.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any of my Ummah is afflicted with distress and grief, and makes this Du'a, it will be accepted from him... (then he mentioned the dua).' This hadith, found in collections like Sahih Ibn Hibban and Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, highlights the Prophet's ﷺ guidance on seeking refuge in Allah during times of hardship, using His perfect names and attributes. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Book 31, Hadith 1212: Narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'No person suffered any anxiety or grief, but supplicated to Allah using this Du'a, but Allah would accept his supplication for him: O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave. My front-hair is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever executed and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You have taught to any of Your creation, or You have retained for Yourself in the knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur’an the life of my heart and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief and a reliever of my anxiety.'
