Dua for Understanding the Quran's Meanings in Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 71

اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ

O Allah, grant me understanding in the religion.

Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen

When to Read

This powerful dua is especially poignant when you're praying, particularly during sujood (prostration) or after the obligatory prayers. Imagine yourself in salah, reciting Allah's words. If you feel a disconnect, a desire to truly grasp the depth of what you're reading or hearing, this is the moment to turn to Allah with this supplication.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with a heart that yearns for connection to the Quran. While it's often recited outside of prayer, its essence can be invoked within your salah. Focus on the meaning: you're asking the One who revealed the Quran to open your heart and mind to its wisdom. Imagine you are speaking directly to Allah, as if you were a student earnestly asking your Teacher for insight.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking deeper understanding of the Quran is a noble pursuit. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself supplicated for this knowledge for Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), praying: 'O Allah, teach him the Book (Quran).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 143). This dua, 'Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen', is a direct request for that profound religious understanding, which fundamentally includes understanding the Quran. When you strive to understand Allah's words, you move beyond mere recitation to a connection that can transform your life and prayer.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) took my hand and said, 'O Allah, teach him the Book (Quran).' Sahih al-Bukhari 143. Another narration from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'Allah makes the one whom He intends good, understand the religion.'
