Dua for the Deceased in the Final Tashahhud

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him relief and pardon. Honor his reception and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Enter him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma ighfir lahu wa-rhamhu wa-'afihi wa-a'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' madkhalahu, wa-ghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama nuqqiya ath-thawbu al-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daran khayran min darihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhab-il-qabri wa 'adhab-in-nar

When to Read

This dua is recited in the final Tashahhud of the prayer, after reciting the Tashahhud and sending salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ. It is specifically for supplicating for a deceased Muslim.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a sincere intention to ask Allah for the forgiveness and mercy of the deceased. Face the Qiblah if possible, though it's not a strict condition within the prayer itself. Focus on the meaning of each phrase and humble yourself before Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

Making dua for the deceased is a vital act of kindness that continues to benefit them even after their passing. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this comprehensive dua, which covers forgiveness, mercy, comfort in the grave, and protection from the Fire. It reflects our connection to our deceased brethren and our reliance on Allah's infinite mercy. Such supplications are among the actions that continue to benefit a person after death, as mentioned in hadith like Sahih Muslim 1631.

‘Amr bin al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he said: ‘When my soul is taken, place me in the earth and then turn your faces toward the graveyard and say Allah is the Greatest, and say: O Allah, forgive ‘Amr bin al-‘As and admit him into Paradise, and give him a comfortable station. He said: I said this to my sons when death approached me. When I died, they turned their faces toward the graveyard and said Allah is the Greatest, and they said: O Allah, forgive ‘Amr bin al-‘As and admit him into Paradise, and give him a comfortable station. Then one of them said: 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated on the authority of 'Uqbah bin 'Amir that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The one who prays over a bier and supplicates for the deceased, it is as if he were present at the time of his birth and he prayed for him, and he is like one who bears a burden of a dirham and gives it in charity, and he is like one who bears a burden of two dirhams and gives them in charity.' It was narrated to me by Zuhayr bin Harb, from 'Abd al-Ghaffar bin Sa'd, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from Haywah bin Shuraih, from Ibn Juraij, from Abu az-Zubayr, from Jabir, that the Prophet (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer for 'Abd Allah bin Ubayy and supplicated: O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him and enlighten his face and exalt his rank and forgive what you know of his sins. He said this thrice. He then walked carrying the bier and prayed the funeral prayer over him. It was narrated to me by Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, from Muhammad bin Ja'far, from Ibn Juraij, from Abu az-Zubayr, from Jabir. Ibn Juraij said: I asked Abu az-Zubayr: Did he supplicate with 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him'? He said: Yes, and he supplicated with: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whom amongst us You keep alive, let him live in Islam, and whom You cause to die, let him die in faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not cause us to go astray after him.'
