Dua for Seeking Allah's Help Against Hypocrisy in Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the perishing of Your blessings, and the changing of Your grace, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fu'jati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when you feel a lapse in your sincerity or focus during prayer, or when you notice yourself performing acts of worship without the proper intention or presence of heart. It can be recited at any point during your prayer, especially after the opening takbir (Allahu Akbar) and before beginning your recitation, or during sujood (prostration) where supplication is highly recommended. It's a profound statement of reliance on Allah to guard us against internal spiritual ailments.

How to Read

Recite this dua with earnestness and a sincere heart, truly feeling the need for Allah's protection. Raise your hands as you would for other supplications (dua), if possible, though it can be recited without. Focus on the meaning of the words, acknowledging that true sincerity and protection come only from Allah. This is a personal plea, so whisper it or say it in a voice that reflects your inner state.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication protects the believer from a spiritual decline that can manifest as hypocrisy. By seeking refuge from the 'perishing of blessings' and 'changing of grace', we ask Allah to preserve the spiritual benefits of our worship. It guards against 'sudden punishment', implying that our insincere acts might lead to unforeseen consequences. Most importantly, it shields us from 'all of Your displeasure', a state that no believer would wish to experience. This dua is a cornerstone for maintaining purity of intention in all acts of worship, especially prayer.
