Dua for Remembering the Heaviness of Deeds on the Day of Judgment in Prayer

During Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 770

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to try Your creation with tribulation, take me to Yourself without putting me to trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which will bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l-khayrat, wa tarkal-munkarat, wa hubbal-masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun, wa as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recommended to be recited during the prayer, particularly in the Tashahhud (before the Salam) after sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. It's a moment of intense focus and supplication, perfect for asking Allah for the ability to perform good, avoid bad, and to love Him and those who love Him. Reflecting on the purpose of our actions and their weight on the Day of Judgment can make this dua especially poignant during this time.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence of heart while seated in your prayer, ideally after reciting the final Tashahhud and before saying the Salam. Imagine yourself standing before Allah on the Day of Judgment, and how much you would desire these very things: the strength to do good, the avoidance of sin, and Allah's pleasure. Let the meaning of each phrase resonate within you.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound request for spiritual well-being. By asking to do good deeds and abandon evil, we are seeking Allah's guidance to live a life pleasing to Him, which directly impacts our deeds' weight on the Day of Judgment. Loving the poor is a sign of a pure heart and reflects the Prophet's ﷺ own compassion. The request to be taken by Allah before being afflicted by trials is a plea for a righteous end. Ultimately, seeking Allah's love, the love of those who love Him, and the love of deeds that draw us closer to Him, is the essence of striving for Paradise. This holistic approach to seeking Allah's pleasure helps us remain mindful of our accountability.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: The Prophet ﷺ taught me the Tashahhud and to supplicate between the Tashahhud and the Salam. He taught me this dua: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l-khayrat, wa tarkal-munkarat, wa hubbal-masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.' (O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to try Your creation with tribulation, take me to Yourself without putting me to trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which will bring me closer to Your love.)
