Dua for Remembering the Day of Judgment in Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama wa min 'adhibil qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil mahya wal mamati.

How to Read

Recite this dua in a clear voice, with sincerity and a focused heart. Understand the immense weight of each phrase: seeking refuge from the Hellfire, the grave, the Dajjal, and the trials of life and death. Let this reflection permeate your prayer, transforming it from a mere ritual into a meaningful connection with Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

By seeking refuge in these specific matters, you are not just reciting words; you are actively reminding yourself of the realities beyond this life. This remembrance of the Day of Judgment, the grave, and the ultimate accountability fosters a sense of urgency and sincerity in your worship. It helps keep worldly distractions at bay and focuses your heart on pleasing Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to remind us of the eternal consequences, prompting us to perfect our prayers as if it were our last.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah in the prayer, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa min 'adhabi al-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamati.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trial of the Dajjal, and the trial of life and death.) He would say these phrases after the tashahhud, before the salam.
