Dua for Protection from the Torments of the Grave (Recited During Prayer)

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min 'adhabi jahannam, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is specifically taught to be recited during the final sitting of the prayer, after the Tashahhud and before the Tasleem (the final salutation). It's one of the key protections we seek from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ within the safety of our prayers.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. Ensure you maintain the posture of prayer and recite it as taught by the Prophet ﷺ in the final moments of your prayer, a time when supplications are particularly potent.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking refuge from the grave's torment is crucial because it's a precursor to the Day of Judgment. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, despite his purity, would frequently seek this protection, highlighting its importance for all of us. This dua encompasses seeking refuge from major trials: the grave, Hellfire, the tests of this life and the hereafter, and the specific trial of the Dajjal, making it a comprehensive shield sought in a blessed state of worship.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you finishes the (last) Tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-jahannam, wa min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.' (Sahih Muslim 588; Sahih al-Bukhari 6306, 832).
