Dua for Protection from the Evil of the Day and Night During Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 588a

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal (Antichrist).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannam, wa min 'adhabi al-qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-Masihid-Dajjal.

When to Read

This profound supplication is to be recited during the final tashahhud of every prayer, right before you say the taslim (salutation of peace). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explicitly commanded his companions to make this dua at this crucial point in their prayer, emphasizing its immense importance for every believer.

How to Read

When you reach the final tashahhud, after reciting the Tashahhud and Salat-ul-Ibrahimiyyah (Durood), make this heartfelt dua with full presence of mind and concentration. Reflect on each element of protection you are seeking: from the severe punishments of the Hereafter, and from the vast tribulations of this world. Understand that by asking Allah for refuge from the 'trials of life and death' (`fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat`), you are asking for safety from *all* the various evils, temptations, and difficulties that manifest throughout your days and nights, as well as the ultimate test of the Dajjal.

Virtues & Benefits

By consistently reciting this powerful dua, you are seeking Allah's comprehensive protection from the gravest dangers and trials that await humanity. This includes: protection from the immense torment of Hellfire; safety from the punishment and darkness of the grave; safeguarding from all forms of trials, temptations, and evils that occur throughout one's life (which naturally includes the 'evil of the day and night') and at the terrifying moment of death; and finally, shielding from the unparalleled deception and mischief of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal (the Antichrist). The Prophet ﷺ's emphasis on this dua highlights its critical role in a believer's spiritual shield, providing peace of mind knowing you've sought refuge from what matters most.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "When any one of you finishes the final Tashahhud, let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the Dajjal." — Sahih Muslim 588a (Book 5, Hadith 234)
