O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
When to Read
This powerful dua is often recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after the Tashahhud in his obligatory and supererogatory prayers, just before the Tasleem (the final salutation). It's a moment of profound submission and reliance on Allah, when we are closest to Him in worship and most receptive to His mercy. Reciting it then provides a spiritual shield against the anxieties and challenges that can plague both our waking hours (day) and our rest (night).
How to Read
This dua is typically recited in the sitting position after the Tashahhud and before concluding the prayer with Tasleem. It's important to recite it with sincerity and a focused heart, truly feeling the need for Allah's protection. Make a conscious effort to contemplate the meanings of each phrase as you utter them, understanding that you are seeking refuge from specific difficulties and negative states.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication offers comprehensive protection. It guards against emotional burdens like distress and sorrow, shielding the heart from despair. It seeks strength against physical and spiritual weakness, asking Allah to save us from the inability to act and a lack of motivation.
