O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika shai'an wa ana a'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lam
When to Read
This profound supplication is recommended to be recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during his prayers, specifically after the Tashahhud and before concluding with the Tasleem. It's a critical moment for seeking Allah's protection before the prayer is sealed.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely after the final sitting (Tashahhud) in your prayer, just before you say the Tasleem (the final salutations). Utter it with deep humility and a sincere heart, reflecting on the gravity of shirk and your reliance on Allah for protection. The Prophet ﷺ would often recite this, indicating its importance.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly addresses the most grievous sin in Islam: shirk (associating partners with Allah). By seeking refuge from even known shirk and asking forgiveness for unknowingly falling into it, we are actively safeguarding the very foundation of our faith. The Prophet's ﷺ practice of reciting this highlights its immense value in purifying our worship and ensuring our prayers are accepted solely for Allah. It serves as a powerful reminder that even in our most devoted acts, we are vulnerable and need constant divine protection.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you finishes his last Tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah from four things, and say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab jahannam, wa min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min fitnat al-mahya wal-maamat, wa min shar fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal)." Then he should say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika shai'an wa ana a'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lam (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly)."' *Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 6306*
