Dua for Khushu: Cultivating Humility in Prayer

During Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 1971

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds and abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And when You intend to put Your creation to trial, take me to Yourself without subjecting me to that trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of any deed that will bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghaira maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, but it's particularly beneficial to make it part of your supplications after salah, during the night, or anytime you feel your connection with Allah needs strengthening. It's especially relevant when you feel a lack of focus or humility in your prayers and wish to improve.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a present heart. Raise your hands as you would for other supplications, facing the Qiblah if possible. Reflect on each part of the dua: asking for the ability to do good, to avoid sin, to love the less fortunate, to be protected from trials, and to attain Allah's love and the love of those who love Him, along with the love of actions that draw you closer to Him. True khushu comes from understanding and embodying these requests.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound plea for spiritual well-being and a deep connection with Allah. It addresses key elements for a righteous life: performing good, abstaining from evil, showing compassion, seeking protection from trials, and ultimately, drawing closer to Allah through His love and the love of actions that please Him. Cultivating these aspects directly enhances khushu by focusing the heart on its Creator and purpose.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'I asked my Lord for three things for my Ummah. He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy them by famine altogether, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to destroy them by drowning altogether, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to make them fight one another, and He withheld that from me.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1971, Sunan An-Nasa'i 1306). The specific dua for khushu is often associated with the Prophet's own supplications, as found in other narrations. A related supplication that embodies seeking closeness to Allah is: Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghaira maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik. (O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds and abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And when You intend to put Your creation to trial, take me to Yourself without subjecting me to that trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of any deed that will bring me closer to Your love.)
