Dua for Achieving Khushu' (Humble Devotion) in Salah

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 832 (Bukhari), 589 (Muslim)

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the False Messiah (Dajjal), and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-mahya wal-mawat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-ma'thami wal-maghram.

Reciting it here allows you to seek His protection from profound evils as you prepare to conclude your salah.

How to Read

Recite this dua clearly and with heartfelt sincerity during the final Tashahhud of your prayer. Understand the meaning of each phrase and reflect on your need for Allah's protection. Your posture should be one of humility and submission, facing the Qiblah, with your heart focused on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge in Allah from some of the most severe trials and torments, both in this life and the hereafter. * **Protection from Grave Punishment:** Seeking refuge from the 'adhab al-qabr shows a deep awareness of the reality of the grave and a desire for Allah's mercy in that transitional phase. * **Steadfastness against Fitnah:** Asking for protection from the trials of the Dajjal and life/death signifies a longing for spiritual resilience during the most testing times. * **Freedom from Burden:** Seeking refuge from sin and debt addresses spiritual and worldly burdens that can weigh a person down, hindering their connection with Allah. By reciting this, you are actively engaging with Allah, asking for His divine shield and support, which is essential for maintaining a pure heart and a focused connection during prayer.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach his companions to seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-mahya wal-mawat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-ma'thami wal-maghram.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the False Messiah (Dajjal), and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.) When asked about the reason for seeking refuge from debt, he said, 'If a person incurs debt, he talks and tells lies, and makes false promises.' Sahih al-Bukhari 832, Sahih Muslim 589.
