Dua al-Qunoot for Fajr Prayer (Shafi'i School)

During Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 402

O Allah, guide us among those You have guided. Grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being. Protect us among those You have protected. Bless us in what You have given. And save us from the evil of what You have decreed, for indeed You decree and none can decree against You. And indeed, none can humiliate whom You have befriended. Blessed and Exalted are You, our Lord. O Allah, indeed we ask You by all that You have called us to, and by that which we have not called You to, of goodness which we have hastened and which we have not hastened. And we seek refuge in You from all that we have sought refuge from You, and from that which we have not sought refuge from You, of evil which we have hastened and which we have not hastened.

When to Read

The Dua al-Qunoot is typically recited in the Fajr prayer, specifically in the second rak'ah after rising from ruku' (bowing). In the Shafi'i school of thought, it is a recommended (sunnah) practice to recite it during Fajr. It can also be recited in other prayers during times of hardship or calamity (qunoot an-nazilah).

How to Read

After completing the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and another surah in the second rak'ah of Fajr, rise from ruku', saying 'Sami Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears whoever praises Him), and upon standing straight, you would recite this Dua al-Qunoot. It is traditionally recited with hands raised, or resting them gently on the sides. The leader of the prayer recites it aloud, and followers recite it silently or in unison.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting Qunoot is a means of seeking Allah's mercy, guidance, and protection. It acknowledges our complete reliance on Him for all matters, asking for His blessings and refuge from all harm. The practice is rooted in the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who taught it to his companions.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them): Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) taught me words to say in the Witr prayer. (He said): Say: 'O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, and grant me well-being among those whom You have granted well-being. O Allah, consecrate me to what You have given and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed, for indeed You decree and none can decree against You. And indeed, none can humiliate whom You have befriended. Blessed and Exalted are You, our Lord.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 1425, Sunan An-Nasa'i 1296, Sunan Ibn Majah 1178. Note: While this hadith specifically mentions Witr, the wording is often adapted for Qunoot in Fajr, particularly in the Shafi'i school, based on the general practice and understanding of Qunoot. The text provided above is the commonly recited version in Fajr for Shafi'is and is based on the essence of supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ.)
