Dua al-Istiftah: Opening Supplications for Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 399

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ

Glory be to You, O Allah, and all praise is due to You. Blessed is Your name, and exalted is Your majesty. There is no god but You.

Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, wa tabarakasmuk, wa ta'ala jadduk, wa la ilaha ghayruk

When to Read

This is recited after saying the Takbir (Allahu Akbar) to begin the prayer (Salah) and before reciting Surah Al-Fatihah. It's a beautiful way to open your conversation with Allah, acknowledging His perfection and majesty before delving into the core of the prayer.

How to Read

Recite this supplication silently after the initial Takbir of the prayer. Ensure you pronounce each word clearly and with full attention to its meaning. It's the first verbal act after the declaration of Allah's greatness to commence Salah.

Virtues & Benefits

This invocation sets a profound tone for the prayer, reminding us of Allah's absolute perfection, His boundless praise, the blessedness of His name, and the loftiness of His status. It centers the worshipper's heart on the One being addressed, fostering sincerity and focus (khushu').

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) started the prayer, he would remain silent for a while... [The hadith then describes the supplication].
