Calling Blessings Upon the Prophet's Family in Prayer

During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 6358 (Bukhari), 405 (Muslim)

O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, just as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah, bestow Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, just as You bestowed Your blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious.

When to Read

This is the most commonly recited form of sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and his family, and it is recited during the tashahhud (the final sitting) of the prayer, after the testimony of faith. It is a crucial part of completing our prayer.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincerity and understanding. It is usually recited after the tashahhud. Focus on the meaning of sending blessings and peace upon the Prophet ﷺ and his blessed household, recognizing Allah's greatness and His bestowal of blessings. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic clearly.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific wording because sending blessings upon him and his family is a vital part of our prayers. It's an act of obedience to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), who commanded us to send blessings upon His Messenger (peace be upon him). It is also a way to show love and respect for the Prophet ﷺ and his household, and it is known that prayers are more likely to be accepted when they include sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ himself said: 'Whatever you say, begin with the praise of Allah and His glorification, then send prayers upon me.' (Sunan an-Nasa'i 1285 - Sahih)

Narrated Abu Humaid As-Sa'idi: The companions asked: "O Allah's Messenger! How should we send blessings to you?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Say: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatihi, kama sallayta 'ala Al-i Ibrahim, wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatihi, kama barakta 'ala Al-i Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6358). Another narration includes: '...wa 'ala aali Muhammad...' (and upon the family of Muhammad). (Sahih Muslim 405)
