O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and the domination of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
When to Read
This powerful supplication is particularly relevant when you find yourself burdened by debt, having exhausted all available means to repay it. It's a dua to turn to when feelings of worry, helplessness, and the pressure of owing others weigh heavily on your heart and mind. Recite it in your moments of earnest need, after fulfilling the obligatory prayers, or during the blessed times like the last third of the night.
How to Read
Make this dua with sincerity and a heart full of reliance on Allah. Raise your hands as you supplicate, a gesture of seeking help from the One who has ultimate control. Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) if possible. Repeat the phrases clearly, internalizing their meaning and feeling the need for Allah's intervention. Remember, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua, so reciting it embodies following his Sunnah.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses seeking refuge from multiple afflictions that often accompany overwhelming debt: distress and sorrow (which can lead to despair), incapacity and laziness (which can hinder efforts to find solutions), cowardice and stinginess (which can prevent you from seeking help or being generous with what you have), and most directly, the overpowering nature of debt and the harshness of people who may demand repayment. By reciting this, you are entrusting your situation to Allah, seeking His protection and facilitation, not just for debt relief, but for overall well-being and strength to face challenges.
