Morning and Evening Dua for Debt Relief

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow. I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness. I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess. And I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua should be recited in the morning after Fajr prayer and in the evening after Asr prayer. It is part of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ practice to seek Allah's protection from various afflictions, including the heavy burden of debt and the pressure it can bring from others.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Raise your hands slightly in supplication as you do so. Understand the meaning behind each phrase you utter. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though the primary condition is the sincerity of your heart. The Prophet ﷺ taught us this comprehensive supplication to shield ourselves from these specific worries.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection by seeking refuge in Allah from a range of debilitating issues. Specifically regarding debt, it addresses the 'burden of debt' (ghalabatid-dayn), which implies not just the debt itself but the overwhelming pressure and stress it causes. It also includes seeking refuge from 'the oppression of men' (qahri-rijal), which can be the pressure, judgment, or demands from creditors or society that often accompany overwhelming debt. By reciting this regularly, we are actively engaging Allah's protection against these trials and seeking His assistance in overcoming them.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet ﷺ entered the Masjid one day and saw a man from the Ansar called Abu Umamah. He asked: 'What is the matter with you that I see you sitting in the Masjid when it is not the time for prayer?' He replied: 'It is worry and debts, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Shall I not teach you a saying that, if you say it, Allah will remove your worry and settle your debts?' He said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Say in the morning and in the evening: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri-rijal.' So I said that, and Allah removed my worry and settled my debts. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6369)
