Dua for the Deceased and Their Debts

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of his sins just as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Grant him a home better than his former home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is recited for a deceased Muslim, especially during funeral prayers (Salatul Janazah) and at the graveside. It is also beneficial to make this dua regularly for any deceased Muslim whose name comes to mind.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and humility. Face the Qiblah if possible when making dua, though it is not a strict requirement. Raising hands can be done if appropriate, but the focus should be on the heartfelt supplication. The dua is addressed directly to Allah, seeking His mercy and forgiveness for the departed soul.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses comprehensive supplications for the deceased, covering forgiveness, mercy, well-being, honor in the afterlife, and protection from the grave and hellfire. It highlights the importance of continuing to pray for those who have passed on, as their deeds have ceased, but the prayers of the living can still benefit them. Specifically regarding debts, while this dua doesn't directly mention them, a separate understanding in Islamic jurisprudence is that a deceased person's debts must be settled from their estate before inheritance is distributed, or by their family if they wish to ease their burden in the hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The soul of the believer is tied to his debt." (Sunan Ibn Majah 2413, Sahih). Therefore, ensuring debts are settled is a crucial act of mercy for the deceased.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by 'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) praying over a dead body and I memorized his supplication. He said: 'O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of his sins just as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Grant him a home better than his former home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' 'Awf bin Malik said: 'I wished that I had been in his place (the deceased's) and that this supplication was made for me.'
