Dua for Strength to Resist the Temptation of Debt

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overpowering of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

Recite this dua regularly, especially when feeling the pressure of financial needs or when faced with situations that might tempt you to take on debt unnecessarily. It's particularly relevant after each obligatory prayer as an act of seeking divine protection.

How to Read

Recite with sincere conviction, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught for seeking refuge. Understand that while this dua asks for protection, it also requires us to take practical steps towards financial prudence and hard work.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encompasses seeking protection from a wide range of spiritual and worldly burdens that often accompany financial distress. By seeking refuge from 'overpowering debt' (ghalabad-dayn), we are directly asking Allah to shield us from the crushing weight and stress that debt can bring, which can lead to 'subjugation of men' (qahrir-rijali) – being forced into humiliating or difficult situations due to inability to repay.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah by saying: (Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.) And he would say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overpowering of debt and the subjugation of men.'
