Debt
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, and pardon him and honor his reception, and make his grave spacious. And wash him with water and snow and hail. And cleanse him from his sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. And give him a house better than his house, and a family better than his family, and a wife better than his wife. And admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This supplication is typically recited during the funeral prayer and when visiting the grave of a deceased Muslim. It encompasses general pleas for forgiveness and mercy for the departed, which implicitly covers any outstanding matters like debts. While this specific hadith doesn't mention debts directly, the general supplication for the deceased is comprehensive. For specifically addressing debts, individual dua or family members settling them is the primary means.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and heartfelt remembrance of the deceased. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, asking Allah's mercy for them. It is appropriate to raise hands when making dua, though not strictly necessary in all contexts, especially during congregational prayers. The focus is on the intention and the connection with Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's immense mercy for the deceased. By asking for forgiveness, pardon, and protection from the grave's torment, we are essentially asking Allah to settle all their affairs, seen and unseen, which would include any outstanding obligations like debts. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua, showing its importance in seeking comfort and ease for the departed in the Hereafter.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Awf ibn Malik: The Prophet (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer for someone. I do not remember that he cursed him or praised him, and he said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him security, and pardon him, and honour his reception, and make his grave spacious. And wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him from sin as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, and give him a house better than his house, and a family better than his family, and admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.' Awf said: And he commanded the people to pray for him (the deceased). (Sahih Muslim 963)
