اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ.

O Allah, suffice me with what You have permitted instead of what You have forbidden, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I may not need anyone but You.

Allahumma akfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.

When to Read

This is a powerful dua to recite when facing overwhelming debt, especially if it stems from unforeseen circumstances or misfortune. Recite it regularly, particularly after your obligatory prayers, and when you feel the weight of your financial burdens pressing down. It's a supplication for Allah's help to find lawful means to clear your debts and to be independent of needing to ask from people.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction and full trust in Allah (Tawakkul). Ensure you are in a state of purity (Wudu) if possible. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for other duas. Focus on the meaning of the words and believe that Allah has the power to relieve your distress. It is also crucial to pair this dua with tangible efforts to improve your financial situation, such as seeking lawful employment or honest means of earning.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive request for relief from financial hardship. It asks Allah to provide lawful sustenance ('halal') so one is not driven to unlawful means ('haram') out of desperation. It also seeks Allah's independent provision ('ghina') through His grace, fostering self-sufficiency and reliance solely on Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companion Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was facing a similar plight, indicating its effectiveness in times of great need. This supplication builds faith and strengthens the connection with Allah, the ultimate Provider.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his cousin and son-in-law, Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), a dua to recite when facing debt. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'I complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the debt that was weighing on me. He said to me: 'O Ali, shall I not teach you some words that if you say them, Allah will remove your debt, even if it were as heavy as a mountain? Then he said: Say: Allahumma akfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.' (O Allah, suffice me with what You have permitted instead of what You have forbidden, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I may not need anyone but You.)
