اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful, instead of what You have made unlawful, and make me independent by Your grace, instead of the people.
Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.
When to Read
This dua is profoundly effective when facing financial hardship or the burden of debt. It's particularly beneficial to recite after Fajr prayer, as this is a time when supplications are often accepted. You can also make it a habit to recite it daily, especially if you are actively seeking lawful means to repay your debts and gain financial independence.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere conviction and a clear intention. Focus on the meaning of the words, truly asking Allah (SWT) for His provision and sufficiency. Raise your hands in supplication, as is the Sunnah, and present your need to your Creator. It’s also important to accompany this dua with tangible effort towards earning a lawful income and managing your finances wisely to repay your debts.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful supplication encapsulates the essence of seeking lawful provision and independence from creation. By asking Allah to suffice us with His lawful means, we are turning away from impermissible avenues that might seem like quick fixes but lead to greater trouble. The second part, asking for richness through His grace, is a plea for self-sufficiency that frees us from relying on the favor of others, fostering dignity and contentment. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companion Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was facing a significant debt, highlighting its efficacy in situations of financial strain. (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563). Relying on Allah in this way is a source of immense peace and spiritual strength, knowing that our ultimate provision comes from Him alone.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him (Ali) words to say in the event of his debt, saying: 'If you say this, Allah will repay your debt for you, even if it were as heavy as a mountain.' The words were: اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ (Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.) - 'O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful, instead of what You have made unlawful, and make me independent by Your grace, instead of the people.'
