Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overpowering of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua is especially beneficial to recite when you feel overwhelmed by debt, facing financial hardship, or experiencing the pressure of owing money to others. It is also a good general supplication to make regularly, perhaps after each obligatory prayer, to safeguard yourself against these worries.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, understanding that true reliance is upon Allah. Raise your hands as you would in supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's protection and relief from the burdens of debt and the anxieties it brings. Make it a habit to utter it daily, asking Allah to ease your affairs and provide for you.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encompasses seeking refuge from four major spiritual and worldly ailments. By specifically asking for protection from 'overpowering debt and the subjugation of men' (qahri-rijal), we are seeking Allah's intervention not just to clear our debts, but also to shield us from the humiliation or hardship that can come from being indebted to others. It's a comprehensive plea for financial freedom and dignity, acknowledging that ultimate relief and strength come from Allah alone.
