O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful, and make me independent of all others by Your grace.
Allahumma ikfini bihalalika 'an haramika wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwaka
When to Read
When the weight of debt feels crushing, and you've exhausted every conventional avenue to repay what you owe – perhaps you've tried different jobs, adjusted your spending, or sought extensions, but relief still seems distant. This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), is precisely for such moments of profound reliance on Allah. Recite it with a sincere heart, particularly after your daily prayers, or during the last third of the night when duas are most readily accepted.
How to Read
Before you begin, reflect on the meaning of each phrase. You are asking Allah to make you self-sufficient through His lawful provisions, protecting you from resorting to haram means, and granting you independence from everyone but Him. This requires **tawakkul**, a deep trust in Allah, coupled with continued practical efforts. Keep striving to find lawful means to repay, be it through work, budgeting, or seeking help from those who can assist. Your words, combined with your actions and a firm belief in Allah's power, make your supplication potent.
Virtues & Benefits
The sheer power of this dua is highlighted in the accompanying hadith: Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) assured the distressed slave, 'If you had a debt like the mountain of Sir, Allah would pay it off for you.' This isn't just about financial relief; it's about a profound shift in mindset. Reciting it instills **contentment (qana'ah)**, strengthens your reliance on Allah alone, and protects you from the desperation that might lead to unlawful earnings. It's an affirmation that Allah's grace is boundless, and He is the ultimate Provider, capable of removing even the most daunting burdens.

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a slave who had agreed upon a contract of emancipation came to him and said: 'I am unable to pay my ransom, so help me.' He said: 'Shall I not teach you some words which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me? If you had a debt like the mountain of Sir, Allah would pay it off for you. Say: "Allahumma ikfini bihalalika 'an haramika wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwaka."' Abu `Eisa (At-Tirmidhi) said: This Hadith is Hasan Gharib. — Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563
