Hasan HadithJami' at-Tirmidhi 3563

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I may not need anyone but You.

Allahumma akfini bi halalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak

When to Read

This dua is especially powerful when facing overwhelming debt, particularly when it stems from unforeseen medical expenses. Recite it after every obligatory prayer (Fardh salah) and also at times of sincere need and desperation. It's a supplication for Allah to provide halal means to overcome haram circumstances and to grant independence from relying on anyone but Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and firm belief in Allah's ability to answer. It is recommended to raise your hands during the supplication, a sign of reliance and pleading. Maintain a state of purity (wudu) and face the Qiblah if possible. Utter the words clearly and reflect on their meaning, envisioning Allah's response.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua is a beautiful plea for both financial and spiritual independence. It asks Allah to steer us away from unlawful earnings and to grant us enough through His grace that we don't need to ask from creation. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this to his companion Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was burdened with debt, indicating its effectiveness for debt relief, especially when the debt is a source of great hardship, like medical bills. It fosters contentment and reliance solely on the Creator.

Source & Authentication

Tirmidhi narrated from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that a mubaatib (a slave who has agreed to gain his freedom for a price) came to him and said: "I am unable to pay off my mubaataba (the agreed price for freedom), so help me." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will tell you some words that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me, and if you say them, Allah will pay your debt for you, even if it were as big as Mount Sar.' Then he mentioned the dua: 'Allahumma akfini bi halalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.' (O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I may not need anyone but You.)
