Dua for Relief from Debt and Oppression

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4423

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

Recite this dua when you feel overwhelmed by debt and the pressure from creditors. It's particularly relevant when facing situations where you feel unable to meet your financial obligations, and the demands of others weigh heavily on you. This dua is a comprehensive shield against various forms of distress, including the specific burden of debt and being overpowered by people.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely and with conviction, directing your plea to Allah alone. Make it a regular part of your supplications, especially after your obligatory prayers (Salah). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companions, indicating its profound importance. Raising your hands while making dua can also be a sign of earnestness and dependence on Allah. Reflect on the meanings of each phrase as you recite it, truly seeking Allah's protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua offers multifaceted protection. It seeks refuge from emotional distress like anxiety and sorrow, and from spiritual and physical weakness like helplessness and laziness. It also guards against character flaws like cowardice and stinginess. Most importantly for this situation, it specifically asks for protection from 'ghalabatid-dayn' (the overwhelming of debt) and 'qahrir-rijal' (the oppression of men, which includes the pressure from creditors). By reciting this, you are actively seeking Allah's intervention to alleviate your financial burdens and protect you from harsh treatment.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge in Allah with the following words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the oppression of men.) It was said to him: 'You seek refuge from so many things!' He replied: 'Indeed, the person of faith seeks refuge in Allah from many things.'
