Dua for Protection Against Being Overpowered by Debt

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4423

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overpowered by debt and by the tyranny of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial to recite it after every obligatory prayer (Salat). It's a powerful supplication to seek Allah's protection from overwhelming difficulties, including the significant burden of debt and the subjugation that can come with it.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction and a clear intention to seek Allah's protection. Understand the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. Raise your hands in supplication as is the practice when making dua, and ask Allah with certainty that He will answer you. Maintaining a state of purity (Wudu) is recommended when making dua.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul). By seeking refuge in Allah from being overpowered by debt and the oppression of others, we acknowledge that ultimate control and protection lie with Him. This supplication helps to alleviate the mental and emotional distress (hamm and hazan) associated with debt, and it safeguards us from the negative impacts of laziness, fear, and miserliness, which can often exacerbate financial difficulties. It is a comprehensive shield against both internal weaknesses and external pressures.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to supplicate frequently: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overpowered by debt and by the tyranny of men.'
