O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.
When to Read
This powerful dua is excellent to recite daily, especially in the morning and evening. It's particularly relevant when feeling the burden of debt, facing financial stress, or experiencing any form of hardship that weighs on the mind and soul.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, remembering that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate provider and reliever of distress. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. You can raise your hands slightly in supplication, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do. It's best to be in a state of Wudu (ablution) if possible, though not strictly required for this supplication.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses seeking refuge from several significant burdens: worry and grief (often stemming from worldly troubles like debt), helplessness and laziness (which can prevent us from taking necessary actions), cowardice and stinginess (character flaws that hinder progress and generosity), and specifically, the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men (a direct plea for financial freedom and protection from exploitation). By reciting this, we are not only asking for relief from debt but also for strength of character and protection against the underlying issues that can lead to such difficulties. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would frequently supplicate with these words, indicating its immense importance.
Source & Authentication
The hadith is part of a longer narration where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would teach his Companions various supplications. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, helplessness and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.' Anas said: 'So I used to say this often.' Then Allah's Messenger ﷺ came to me and asked: 'What has stopped you from saying it all the time?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am an old man.' Then Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: 'Say: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and grant me sustenance.' (This is a slightly different wording for a different context, but the original dua for debt is explicitly stated as above).
