Dua for Clearing the Debts of a Deceased Parent

Debt
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1510

O Allah, forgive the believing men and believing women, and the Muslim men and Muslim women, and unite their hearts, and bring them together upon Your guidance, and make them firm upon the truth, and pay off their debts.

Allahumma ighfir lil mu'miniina wal mu'minaat, wal muslimiina wal muslimaat, wa allif bayna quluubihim, wajma' 'alaa hudaak, wa saddidhum 'alaa haqqin, wa addi 'anhum duyunuhum.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be made at any time, but it is particularly poignant when reflecting on the responsibilities we have towards our deceased parents, especially if they left behind debts. It's a beautiful way to continue fulfilling their needs in the hereafter.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt intention to benefit your deceased parents. It's best to be in a state of wudu if possible, and to face the Qiblah. Focus on the meaning of the words and envision Allah's mercy enveloping your parents and clearing any burdens they may have left behind.

Virtues & Benefits

Making dua for the deceased is a highly recommended act in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the actions of the living can benefit the dead. This specific dua seeks Allah's forgiveness for them, unity for the community upon guidance, firmness in truth, and crucially, the clearing of their debts. This can alleviate their burden in the grave and bring them closer to Jannah. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua represents the prayer of a righteous child.
