Dua for Allah's Help to Avoid Debt

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4423

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and from the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for reciting at any time, especially when you feel worried about your financial situation or when starting a new venture that might involve financial risk. Making it a habit, perhaps after each obligatory prayer, can help shield you from the burdens of debt and the anxieties that accompany it.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Raise your hands slightly, as one would when making a heartfelt supplication. Imagine seeking Allah's protection from the specific worries mentioned in the dua – the emotional burden of debt, the fear of inability to manage finances, and the humiliation that can come with being indebted and dependent on others.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly powerful because it asks Allah for protection from several interconnected sources of hardship. Seeking refuge from 'ghalabad-dayn' (being overwhelmed by debt) is a direct plea for financial stability. When combined with seeking refuge from 'qahrir-rijal' (the overpowering of men), it encompasses protection from the shame and helplessness that debt can bring, including potential exploitation or harsh treatment from creditors. It's a holistic request for well-being, both spiritual and material.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and from the overpowering of men.)
