Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for any spouse who feels overwhelmed by financial obligations. Recite it during your daily prayers, especially after the obligatory prayers, or at any time you feel the weight of debt pressing down. It's a powerful way to seek Allah's protection and assistance, acknowledging that He is the ultimate provider and solver of problems.

How to Read

Make this supplication with sincerity and conviction. Raise your hands, as is customary when making dua, and recite it with a hopeful heart. It's beneficial to reflect on each phrase, truly seeking Allah's refuge from these specific hardships. You can also combine this with asking Allah for lawful means to repay your debts and for contentment with what He provides.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking refuge in Allah from the burden of debt and being overcome by it is a sign of reliance on Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to protect us from significant worldly and spiritual hardships. Debt can lead to distress (grief and sorrow), prevent one from acting effectively (incapacity and laziness), and can cause immense stress and humiliation (cowardice and stinginess, and being overpowered). By reciting this, you are actively seeking Allah's shield against these severe trials, asking Him to lighten your load and prevent you from falling into deeper trouble.
