QuranQuran 113:1-5, Quran 114:1-6

Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of darkness when it settles, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.' Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer, who whispers in the breasts of mankind, from among jinn and mankind.'

Qul a'udhu birabbil-falaqi min sharri ma khalaqa wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqaba wa min sharri-n-naffathati fil-'uqadi wa min sharri hasidin idha hasada. Qul a'udhu birabbin-nasi malikin-nasi ilahin-nasi min sharril-waswasil-khannasi alladhi yuwaswisu fi sudurin-nasi minal-jinnati wan-nasi.

When to Read

These powerful surahs are to be recited for protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite them for oneself, and also for children. It's a beautiful practice to blow gently on your children after reciting them, especially before they sleep or when they are unwell, seeking Allah's shield.

How to Read

Recite these two surahs with sincerity, understanding their meaning. The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated a specific way to seek protection: reciting them and then blowing gently onto the hands and passing them over the body. This practice, known as 'ruqyah', is a profound way to connect with Allah's mercy and protection.

Virtues & Benefits

The evil eye, or 'al-ayn', is a reality in Islam. Envy can manifest in ways that cause harm, even unintentionally. The Prophet ﷺ himself was affected by the evil eye, as mentioned in authentic hadith, which is why Allah revealed these very surahs to him. Reciting them is a direct command from Allah and a powerful shield against envy and all forms of evil.

Source & Authentication

‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had a pain in any part of his body, he would recite the last three Surahs of the Qur’an (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) and blow gently on the affected area. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite them and rub his hands over his body for his blessings. And when he fell ill with his final illness, I used to recite them and wipe over him with his hand, seeking Allah’s blessing with his hand. — Sahih al-Bukhari 5016
