A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This is a powerful general supplication that can be recited for protection at any time, especially when you feel a sense of unease or when your children are particularly vulnerable. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to seek Allah's protection against all forms of evil, including the harmful effects of the evil eye (al-'ayn), which is a well-recognized spiritual ailment in Islam. Recite it when you see your child, or at any point you wish to invoke Allah's safeguard for them.

How to Read

According to the hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would seek refuge for his grandsons Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) by reciting this dua. The Sunnah is to recite it three times. You can blow gently onto your child after reciting it, or simply make the intention of seeking Allah's protection. The sincerity of your heart and your firm belief in Allah's power are paramount.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct application of seeking refuge in Allah, which is the ultimate protection. It is derived from the Sunnah and carries immense blessing. By reciting it, we are actively invoking Allah's care and shielding our children from unseen harms, including the envy and ill-will that can manifest as the evil eye. It fosters a sense of reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and strengthens our connection to Him as the sole protector.
